What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is not a foot massage!
Reflexology is an ancient complementary therapy. It works with conventional medicine and indeed alongside any other complementary therapy. It is also a holistic therapy which means it treats the whole; mind, body and spirit. Reflexology should not be regarded as an alternative therapy.
Reflexology is the art of applying gentle pressure using fingers and thumbs on various parts of the feet, or when appropriate, on the hands. These areas are points, which correspond to specific organs, glands and systems of the body. By using this gentle pressure, the body is stimulated into working to its maximum capacity, thus relieving, unblocking energy channels and releasing endorphins (the feel good hormones!). The body is then re-balanced and the systems can work to their optimum and help to keep the body healthy. The body has a great ability to heal itself from within – Reflexology is the facilitator.
Reflexology, when practised by a qualified practitioner is a powerful treatment that has many benefits, both physical and emotional.
How can Reflexology help me?
Reflexology is incredibly relaxing.
We live in a very busy and stressful world – therefore any time taken to relax and reduce stress is of great benefit. Although, good for stress, Reflexology is also particularly beneficial for several long term and recurring conditions that many people simply accept.
These are just a few of the more common conditions that Reflexology may help:
- Migraine and Headaches
- IBS
- Arthritis
- Asthma
- Hay Fever
- Sinusitis
- PMT
- Tinnitus
- Insomnia
- Menopausal Problems
- Neck and Back problems
- Stress related problems
- Sciatic Pain
- Pregnancy – Reflexology has been proved to be extremely beneficial both to mother and baby – reducing labour time and lessening the need to take pain killers and in general easing the birth itself.
- Fertility – Reflexology helps to create the best environment for conception to take place. Once again, it is believed that the relaxation process involved is the reason.
What happens at a Reflexology Treatment?
You should allow approximately an hour and a quarter of your time for the first visit, as an initial consultation/questionnaire will be done in complete confidence. The consultation will help to formulate your own personal treatment plan. On the first visit it will be very helpful if you could make a note of any prescribed medication that you might be taking together with dosages.
It is common to feel an increase in energy afterwards or just a general sense of calm and well-being. The treatment should be enjoyable and elating.
